City of Surrey Organic
Waste and Biofuel Facility

Built in 2017, the Surrey Biofuel Facility was the first fully integrated closed-loop organics waste management system in North America. The facility is the largest of its kind in North America and has the capacity to process 100% of the City’s organic waste over the 25-year contract term, along with commercial organic waste.

The Surrey Biofuel Facility can process up to 115,000 tonnes of organic waste every year. It converts the City’s kitchen and garden waste — along with commercial waste from across the region — into renewable natural gas. The biomethane gas is used to fuel the City’s fleet of natural gas-powered waste collection trucks. It also produces a compost product that is suitable for landscaping and agricultural applications.

The City of Surrey Biofuel Facility also significantly aids in Metro Vancouver’s goal of achieving its target of 70% regional waste diversion. The design and operation of this facility is instrumental in reducing community-wide greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 49,000 tonnes per year, the equivalent to taking over 10,000 cars off the road every year. This means Metro Vancouver can eliminate its corporate carbon footprint.
