Biofuel Facility located
in York Region

Convertus are delighted to work with the Region of York to process the Region’s curbside green bin waste for the next 20 years. To achieve this, Convertus is constructing a state-of-the-art biofuel facility that will convert organic waste into certified fertilizer and renewable natural gas.

This state-of-the-art Biofuel facility will have the ability to process up to 169,000 tonnes of green bin material per year. . The new Biofuel facility will significantly reduce annual transport mileage and associated GHG emissions by 15,000 tonnes per year. In addition, the switch to anaerobic digestion technology will significantly reduce the CO2 emissions of processing organic green waste by 12,000 tonnes per year.

Projected to save the Region of York an impressive $85 million over 20 years, the Region of York new Biofuel facility is scheduled to receive first waste in 2027, and meet the Region’s needs through to 2047.

This new Biofuel facility will:

Reduce annual waste transport mileage by an estimated $600,000
Divert up to 160,000+ metric tons of organics from landfill every year
Produce Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) approved fertilizer for use by local food growers & landscapers
Eliminate waste storage, as the Region’s curbside collection trucks can now collect and deliver direct to the new facility for processing.
Create Renewable Natural Gas (biogas) which will be injected into the local natural gas pipeline, sufficient to heat 4,000 homes in the Region of York every year.
