Odour Abatement
by Convertus
Odour control and abatement is a crucial part of any waste treatment process, and subject to strict legislation to minimise odours for local communities. As leaders in organic waste treatment facilities across Canada, the US and in Europe, we want to be a responsible neighbour and maintain local air quality for residents and workers alike.
Our engineers know how to meet the most stringent odour abatement criteria wherever your new organic waste treatment facility may be located worldwide.
ODOUR ABATEMENT
How it Works
Ammonia Scrubbers
Ammonia scrubbers use chemical reactions to remove pollutants by injecting diluted sulphuric acid to neutralise the ammonia. The resulting by-product, ammonium sulphate, is a salt that can be collected and removed. Improved ammonia absolution efficiency means less odour.
Biofilter
Biofilters use a biological process to grow micro-organisms on biofilter media that removes air pollutants. The air flows through a packed bed of wood chips that degrades gaseous pollutants passing through.
+ UV-C Technique
Ultraviolent light is used to destroy odour using a process called oxidation. During oxidation, complex molecules such as ammonia and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are converted into less complex molecules like water and carbon dioxide.
Active Carbon Filter
Active carbon filters are used as a backup filter for high flow or concentrations after the UV-C technique. This acts as an extra layer of protection in case there are any odorous components that were not broken down. The extra layer of protection is just another way we implement measures to reduce odour as much as possible.
Odour Abatement by Design
We design each odour abatement system specifically to treat odorous compounds created by the processes involved and ensure ideal dispersion to the atmosphere.
Our facilities are designed to be airtight and in a constant state of negative pressure. This means that when vehicles enter a facility, the air is sucked back into the building rather than released through the open doors. This enables us to treat and process the odours “in-house”.
The aerobic systems within one of our waste treatment facilities reuses the balance of air within the facility to process the organic steams. This allows for continuous air handling and superior process control.
Odour Abatement Measures
Based on local legislative requirements the system can be designed using:
- Chemical scrubbers
- Humidification
- Dust removal
- Heat exchangers
- Cooling towers
- Booster fans
- Bio-filters
We also believe in building facilities close to generators to reduce the overall carbon footprint.
